Perhaps one day there will also be a London festival of new musicals that could do in London what George Square is doing in Edinburgh...

I'll join you in commenting!

In addition to MMD and the NT Studio, there's also Perfect Pitch, MTM:UK and the newly hatched Musical Theatre @ George Square (an all-musicals Edinburgh Venue) that might very well be part of some sort of National Musical Theatre.

I don't think Lloyd Webber would believe very strongly in uncommercial new work. As you say, he's shown little evidence of doing so in the past. Funding might be more about clever expoitation of Web 2.0 income streams, where possible, or corporate sponsorship.

I assume there's no law against calling something The National Musical Theatre without letters patent or whatever!

A little bird recently told me that the National Theatre is the single biggest recipient of Arts Council funding for the development of new musicals. I have no idea if that's true or not, but I do know that the National Theatre Studio is used year-round, without any publicity, to develop new work that sometimes includes new music theatre. I don't know how much, but I know they do it.

Bless you, Peter Lathan, for mentioning Mercury Musical Developments - who do the best they can in very difficult circumstances, but I can't begin to tell you how much it means to me just to have someone to email about being a musical theatre writer. If they did nothing else, that alone is amazingly helpful.

I'm going to comment on Mark Shenton's blog, if anyone would care to join me...
